
Valsavarenche is a real paradise for nature lovers seeking wilderness and authenticity. Driving up the valley you get astonished by its steep sides. Notice the small streams that in winter turn into ice and are apparently still. Look at the green meadows turning white in winter with silent cross-country tracks.
The road leads to Pont, at 2000 meters a.s.l., where nature become the absolute queen either in summer or in winter. You can easily see herds of ibexes and chamois. Here starts the path reaching the highest Italian mountain: Gran Paradiso.
Plenty of things to do in Valsavarenche: in summer you might approach climbing or fancy the trekking as the valley offers a wide range of itineraries on foot or mountain bike. Fauna and flora are there to be observed, do not miss the monumental trees in Bien and Dégioz or the ferruginous water spring in Eaux Rousses and the marvellous falls in Tignet. Have a rest at the pick nick area in Foncey with its unique scenery.
In winter put on your snow-shoes and plunge into this spotless nature. Reach the king hunting camp, used by the Savoy house during their shooting parties between 19th and 20th century.
The village centre shows the Parish Church, its bell-tower and its holy museum, some frescos and the birth house of Emile Chanoux, martyr of the Resistance during the 2nd World War. Visit the National Park Visitors centre with the exposition about the lynx, the library by "La Maison de la Montagne" and the ethnographical museum. Details of traditional architecture can be seen in Tignet and Nex, chapels are located all over the valley.
It's now tasting time, the traditional dishes of Valsavarenche are fricandò and polenta concia, game, rouion and trifole suté. In summer you might take part in the bread cooking and in the milk processing or buy some souvenir at the annual craftsman's market and exhibition.
