Two cows enter the arena and compete for the title of queen. It's not a rodeo, not even a "corrida". We talk about one of the most important traditions in Aosta Valley which has been handed down from generation to generation. The fight named
Bataille des reines is between the most aggressive and struggling cows, the best cattle of the bovine race in the Valley. Each year, up in the mountains, not far from the meadows, the fights take place from March till October. Every queen will return home showing the bouquet fasten to her horns with coloured ribbons.
At the end of October the queens challenge to a final duel in Aosta and the winner will have the pleasure to be applauded by nine thousand celebrating people.
A curiosity: all the cows fighting have to be in calf (at least 4 months).
